What & where is gluten?

Gluten is an elastic protein found in wheat, rye, barley, graham, spelt & several other whole grains.  It is also found in our prepackaged products such as bread, pasta, pizza, cereal and beer.

Gluten is also good at sneaking into other foods such as soy sauce, gravy, imitation crab meat, salad dressings, hot dogs, canned soups & instant coffee to name a few.  It seems like the list goes on & on.

When first started reading the long list of foods gluten is found in my first reaction was “Wow!, there’s nothing left to eat”.  “What am I going to eat from now on?”  I suddenly felt I would never be able to eat bread, or a muffin again since the majority of gluten is found in baked goods.

The best way to know if a prepackaged product is gluten-free or not is to read the ingredients.  If in doubt don’t buy it, ask your grocer or check with the product manufacturer before buying.
